Ok, I admit it. I wouldn't have gone to this place if some friends hadn't invited my husband and I here for lunch one snowier than expected Spring afternoon. It's not too far from my work, and I've driven by it many times. This location has been three or four different restaurants over the years, and I assumed this was just another in that rotating cycle of generic Mexican food. My first impression was so wrong. We walked in and checked out the menu. There's a lot more here than cheese covered tortillas: moles, caldos, even molcajete. This is the real deal. I ordered the caldo de pollo, a dish I love that is unexpectedly hard to find here. My husband ordered the mole and our friends ordered carnitas and quesadillas. It took a bit to get our food because two large parties were seated ahead of us, something the owner apologized for multiple times. Probably too many times, but I appreciate his eagerness to please. The caldo was just about perfect: tender chicken, just crisp enough vegetables, wonderful broth. All plates at the table were cleaned, and the others seemed quite pleased with what they ordered. And now I have a spot for caldo de pollo. You can't go wrong with that.

Fantastic food and even better service!! Not only did they have great food service but helped us look for our car keys for 3 hours and kept making sure we were ok! Highly recommend!!

Chungas was closed so we came here. Pleasantly surprising, the lady who greeted us and waited on us was very attentive and nice. There was hardly anyway there on a Monday night. There were six of us and we got the big plate that feeds six. I forgot the name of it. It was like 20 handmade tortillas with a huge plate of mixed meat to put on them. Chorizo, carne asada, chicken, and shrimp. It was pretty delicious. The side of rice and beans was 3 bucks and it was a very small amount. That's my only complaint. Overall tons of quality meat and tortillas for cheap. Highly recommend!

Great food at this location. While you wait for your food you get chips and salsa. I ordered the chicken leg and almost got the whole chicken for very little funds. I will be going back there again in the future.

Delicious! Salsas just like Mexico City and tortillas made to order. Meats and veggies were fresh and tasty. The service was attentive and quick.

Don't let the unassuming simple-looking joint fool you into thinking this is just another Mexican fast food dispensary akin to Beto's. Very good food. Maybe the best salsa in Salt Lake. A bit on the hot side for some, but flavorful and their own recipe. The soup selection is authentic, filling, wonderful.

Wow! Just what some out-of-towners were looking for authentic Mexican food fresh-cooked and very satisfying. We had the molcajete, tongue tacos and agua de jamaica. It was awesome! We drove by the Red Iguana, which had a line of hipster gringos out the door, to get to this little place that only had a few Latinos inside. When we walked in we were a little afraid because there wasn't any food being cooked, but as soon as we ordered the action began. It's a family business and everything is casero (homemade). Although we live hours away we are scheming to get back to SLC so we can try some of the other dishes on the menu. If you want gringo field food with lots of sour cream, lettuce and guacamole then go to Los Hermanos. This place is the real deal for Mexican Food. The family that runs it is from D.F.

GO HERE NOW! Homemade everything. We stopped by one Saturday night with an itch for good Mexican food, and were not disappointed. From the horchata to the tortillas--everything is on point.

Muy Delicioso! We had the birria, chile relleno and enchiladas con mole. The birria was close to the taste of my sister-in-laws, which is hard to beat. The chili rellenos were lightly battered and didn't taste like an egg omelet like some places make it. The mole was sweet and hot, good too. My other daughter got a chimichanga and it was smothered in a yummy tomato sauce and cheese. Very authentic and great service. Our plates were empty at the end! Also they have a "salad bar" of salsa and side items, the roasted jalapeño was delicious, creamy and a perfect combination to the meal. Prices were great for a home style meal!

Wow. Let me start with a few thoughts rolling around in my head: I mean NO disrespect to my new Utahn neighbors... but all of the five-star comments regarding El Asadero tell me one thing... I am convinced that you guys up here have NO CLUE what *real* Mexican food tastes like! Based on what I had been reading here on Yelp - I could not wait to try this place for the first time. Today was finally the day. I, too, have heard of the legend of the "Red Iguana" - and it had come highly recommended by local friends of mine...and - as I have read/heard - - the line was substantial during the lunch hour. But I had my sights on the place with the "real deal"..."authentic" Mexican food. I really, really, really wanted to like this place...and had high hopes based on what other reviewers have said. First of all... unless you grew up in Mexico (I did, partially...my parents had a house in Baja California) or a border-state (Southern California, AZ, NM, TX...) - you may not have ever tasted real Mexican food! I have always said that all the good chefs left Mexico for East Los Angeles, Tucson, El Paso or Albuquerque! I am spoiled because my Mamacita was born in El Sereno, California...and we were frequent diners at many hole-in-the-wall tacos de carnitas spots up and down East First Street in E.L.A. I am a third-generation native Angeleño and am proud of that fact! O.K. the place really does not look like much on the outside. But it's clean and well-lit inside. The menu was pretty basic....not 1/10th of the size of some of the places off Whittier Blvd. "back at home". Being a bit of a carnitas aficionado... that's what I went for. O.K. - 1) The Diet Coke machine put out soda-water with a little brown food-coloring. That loses them one-star right there!! 2) They brought out chips and salsa. I didn't see the bag behind the counter, but I swear they served me Doritos. The salsa was watery and virtually tasteless. Tasteless salsa is an oxymoron where I come from! 3) The portion of carnitas was good-sized...no complaints on the quantity for $7.50. But the carnitas itself was so bland.... I actually did something I never do....I added salt!! Carnitas con no sabor!! I could hardly believe it! It came with pico de gallo that looked delicious and fresh...but once again... no flavor. I dumped the whole little stone dish of the tasteless salsa over the whole mess to get some sort of treat for my taste buds....but to no avail!! I should have asked if they had any Cholula salsa in the back!! I finished what was on the plate (I was starving).... and found a pretty big chunk of pig-bone mixed in with the pork-meat. It was hard and sharp.... not a piece of gristle as sometimes happens with AUTHENTIC carnitas. Wow. I was not expecting that! I finished my brownish club soda and headed out the door, completely disappointed and NOT satisfied! Oh.... on my way out the door I asked the lady who waited on me if they ever made fresh chicharrónes. I'm not sure if she even knew what they were based on the quizzical look on her face. I don't think I'll venture back. It's too far of a drive for very mediocre "Mexican Food". As they say... your mileage may vary... but El Asadero would last about a week in East L.A. before they closed for lack of business.

Carnitas tacos with taco bar... Hand made corn tortillas that were served warm- guac was soooooo tasty. Looking forward to trying the Chile rellenos next time. Place is delicious. Better then the packed, over priced Iguana down the street.

John S. comments are right on. Do not let the store front fool you. This is the real deal Mexican food. We were headed to Red Iguana down the street and the line was out the door, so I yelped and found this 5 star rated place. Looks like a take out place from the outside but it is so much more than that as the food is fantastic. Run by the husband and wife and they are extremely friendly and provided us with great service. The 3 of ordered the carnitas plate for $7.50 and it was fantastic served with freshly made corn tortillas. If you are in the area, give this place a try you will be glad you did.

Everything I've had there I've loved. I also love that there's a drive thru. Only complaint is they seem really stingy/forgetful with the sauce/salsa. As long as you ask they'll give it to you, but you have to remember to ask. :)

Clean place, great tasting food, friendly owner/cook. Was going to go to the Red Iguana but the line there was out the door. I'm glad, because El Asadero was way better. Had the Carnitas plate and was not disappointed. You won't regret eating there - it's always good to get authentic Mexican food.

Great casual dining. Smothered Carne Asada Burrito is awesome. Service is personal and friendly. Good location if you are near down town, just on North Temple. Good quality everytime.

Don't let the store front scare you off.... Clean, family run, a/c, super friendly service, AMAZING FOOD. It is a bit small and not a intimate atmosphere, but the price and the food is so good. Seriously, just try it. I personally wont go back to red Iguana anytime soon.

Came across these guys as they were selling food at my work. Barbecoa usually were the ones who came but as soon as these guys showed up their business halted. Some of the best Mexican in salt lake. Amazing smothered beef burrito for 6.50. 2 dollars cheaper then barbecoa same size burrito that tastes much better. Also has fantastic Horchata.

I came across this place because I was trying to find a good mexican food place in SLC, I had tried other places like Beto's (which I did not like at all), and found this place to be the best mexican food in SLC so far. I come from CA so my standards for mexican food are pretty high considering the amount of diversity in CA. I think the owner's really nice and the atmosphere overall feels homey. The tacos are bomb, but so is the birria and gorditas which I have also tried. Overall, great place and not expensive to have good food!

Dont get all the hype here. Does anyone else find the whole ordering process confusing? They cant decide if its fast food or a dining establishment. You order your food up front and then you sit down and they bring it to you. They had chips and salsa sitting out and wasnt sure if uou just take one or..??? I asked the guy if i could have some and he looked at me kind of confused and said "sure, if you need some". ???? So.....do they usually bring them with the meal or? My son and i kind of looked at each other puzzled. The food. We had to wait about 25 mins for our food. They had maybe 3 tables. Thought the food could be quicker. We had the chile rellanos combo and 6 tacos. 2 carnitas, pastor, and asada. The meats were......meh. After they bring you your food to have to make your way back to the front of the restaurant to get your condiments, again just seemed not setup right. The rellanos combo was good. They used real cheese, not the tofu looking cheese other places use and its not queso fresco. THE ONLY THING SAVING THIS REVIEW FROM 1 STAR IS THE HANDMADE CORN TORTILLAS. THEY ARE PUFFY AND FRESSSSSSHHHH AND REALLY GOOD. Its just too bad everything else about this place is meh.....and confusing. We spent $25 between the two if us. If you want tacos, the taco stand in the century landromat are better, at least the meat, and cheaper. Rancho Market and rancheritos have better food.

I sort of thought this would be like a molcasalsa, but no, it's more or less a regular Mexican restaurant. Inside seems to be very authentic and the people running it are utterly fantastic, easily one of the best parts of the experience, so much so that even though they kind of pooched the order a bit, I didn't mind. The food, however, didn't quite make it all the way to that sort of rich promise and it has a lot to do with the sauces. All of them, visually and texturally, seemed to be sort of odd. Some were good tasting, but seemed to really miss that rich sort of punch that one comes to expect, know and love from this style of food. Menu could also use a bit of re-doing as the arrangement can be a bit trying to parse. They also have the Mexican sodas and a soda fountain featuring a fairly pedestrian selection. To that food, the chile rellenos are among the best I've ever had. I wound up scraping most of the sauce off, as it really didn't need that. Oddly, you can't break this out of the combination, for whatever reason. I also had a variety of tacos. Al Pastor, let me just say it, is now a full-on trendy buzzword and when that happens, it largely begins to mean nothing. The largest thing on the outside street sign is Al Pastor (although I think they spell it "El Pastor") and I cannot, in good conscience, give them much regard on that note. Honestly, I found the Al Pastor to be a significant step down from either Chunga's or especially Angelito's, who is still running circles around everyone else in the city. The refried and carne asada were acceptable, but not much more. They definitely were suffering from a lack of seasoning. Rice was a touch above average. Carnitas were definitely the best of the lot and though fairly dry, were the only meat I'd order again, though they could have also used more flavor. This was also the case with the chips and salsa and nearly every other food item, except those Chile Rellenos. So, definitely this place is the spot to go if you're a fan of Chile Rellenos. You could go to dozens on places and not find one better. Everything else...just not quite there. Not outright bad, but given the competition in the city, let alone in the immediate area, they have some more work to do to be a viable choice, wonderful staff notwithstanding.

This place looks like a colorful fast food joint on the outside but don't let that fool you. Inside is quite the gem. Wonderful tacos with homemade corn tortillas. Tamales are also great. And the best part is the salsa bar complete with roasted hot peppers (jalapenos when I visited). There is a great spice kick with the salsa and peppers but also very flavorful. The process of ordering/paying is a little bit different. You order at the counter and then go sit down. Your food will either be brought to you or you go pick it up when you are called. If you are still hungry you can go and order some more. When you are done you go to the cash register at the counter and tell them what you ordered and then pay. The menu is in both Spanish and English and when I was there most of the patrons were speaking Spanish. But as an English speaker and gringo I did not feel out of place as was certainly welcomed. Food seems to be made to order and it took maybe 10 minutes for the food to be ready. Tortillas were made by hand from fresh masa. Chips and salsa were complimentary while we waited. The only complaint was the drink fountain mixture (coke) seemed to be off. I believe they have Mexican coke in bottles so if you want a soft drink that would be the way to go. They also have horchata with a nice cinnamon kick to it. There is also a drive through but I'm not sure how well that works with the timing of food cooked to order and all.

Great portions. Great prices. Great food with authentic Mexican flavor profiles. The hand made tortillas are some of my favorite. They could be more generous with the salsa.

It's nice to find taqueria style Mexican food available for a reasonable price anywhere. In Salt Lake City, it was surprising. The tacos al pastor are shaved off the traditional trompo, and the tortas I've had there have been excellent.

  • Sam D.

Just awesome food! The corn tortillas are fresh and soft! The tacos are the bomb! Plenty of meat in the tacos! The Al Pastor meat is to die for! Asada and carnitas are flavorful. Don't let the venue fool you! It might not look desirable but the taste of the food will soon make this a must return and a fav on your short list.

Ghetto-licious but a little more expensive then what I wanted it to be. 2 Entrees and 1 desert cost $18, plus $2 tip because we dined in. It was half service style dining, and really the food is mostly fast-food style anyway For $20, I could get a really nice takeout dinner for 2 from Red Iguana which is a block down the road, and I'm probably going to do that next time. Anyway, El Asadero seems to have a pretty decent menu, but there is a pretty significant catch. Another review said it was than "cheese covered tortillas" and I'm pretty sure that's true...if you eat meat. As I don't, I had the option of several variations of a cheese covered tortilla. Basically I could get a burrito or a fried cheese tortilla. And the burrito came out in a meat sauce anyway. Most of the more creative options---tamales, mole, tacos dorado, etc.---DO NOT have a vegetarian option, and they won't make them without meat. They have handmade tortillas so if I do go back I will try the Gorditas, if they're willing to make them without meat. (Which is a gamble.) Their cheese tacos were good (but again, it was cheap cheese + tortilla), their flan was delicious but my burrito was sort of tasty but very sloppy goopy experience. Still ate the whole thing, but it desperately needed texture, so I ate it with a whole load of diced veggies and chips to compensate. The chips and salsa were delicious. I really think that if you order the right things here, it's worth it. But eating in is awkward because, considering that it's just divey Mexican food, you really don't want a waiter to wait on you- that requires tipping for service you didn't really want or need and it makes dining a little bit pricier. However, if you want takeout you have to remember to stock up on salsas and veggies from their salad bar. It's essential! (Fair warning, when I went the "salad bar" was just chopped onion, cilantro, and a different kind of salsa. I get the impression it normally has more stuff.) FINAL VERDICT: Get this food as Takeout ONLY. If you want divey mexican food, this is the place, but it is expensive for what it is. Consider what it is, and how it's not very cheap, I'm also surprised this place closes at 9pm, which seems early for hole in the wall mexican food! Also, vegetarians beware.

Best authentic Mexican food on North Temple!! I rather come here than the red iguana. The chicken is super white taste so good makes you wanna slap somebody's mama

  • Surfi G.

I went here because of the rave reviews saying this tastes authentic. If this is what authentic Mexican food tastes like, I feel very disappointed. I ordered beef chimichanga, taco, and something else I forgot, but all of them are not that good. Even the chips and salsa. Also, we went in when they didn't have enough people to serve. We ended up waiting for our food for 1.5 hours and we even helped them clean up cos they were so slammed with only 2 people in the kitchen. Anyway we didn't expect anything back, just good food. But the food is rather bland. If that's what you like, go for it. As for me, the beef chimichanga reminds me of wet dog food. I'm not trying to offend anyone but this place is just overrated and pricey. I really wanted to like this place cos the lady who's working there is nice. But it's just not good. Sorry..

My boyfriend and I have been here a couple of times now. I've had the smothered chicken burrito and the chicken enchiladas and they are wonderful! I would recommend this place to everyone! Don't let the building fool you. Great food in this building! Chips and salsa are also great!

This restaurant is located in the "sketchy" part of town which is where all the good Mexican restaurants are. The service was wonderful! They were extremely quick to help and very friendly. They sat us down and brought us menus after we told then it was our first time here instead of the regular ordering at the counter. They got our food out to us in under 10 minutes but there wasn't anyone else here. The food was amazing! It had a great authentic taste and there sauce was some of the best I have ever had. I will definitely be coming here again.

Came here because Chungas was way too busy. I'm a fan. Good tacos (asada was the best, but the lengua and al pastor were pretty good as well), condiments, chips and salsa at a killer price. If you're on North Temple headed to the airport, try this place out.

Great food. Super friendly owner/cook. Prices are low without comprising quality. If I lived in Utah I would definitely be back. The owner is engaging and very conscientious about your experience. The owner promptly delivered chips and salsa to our table. The chips were fresh and crispy...no stale chips here. The salsa was fresh with just a little bit of heat. I had the chicken enchilada combo while my husband had the smothered chicken burrito. Both meals were full of flavor and freshness. I recommend visiting this place if you are in the area. While I understand (based on reviews only) that Red Iguana just down the road has great food....if you want excellent food, great service and NO WAIT head a few blocks down N. Temple and you can find it all.

I love this place! I lived a block away for a couple years and I went there at least once a week. Lovely family owned place. The owner is incredibly friendly. I love eating there. Food is authentic and delicious. Fresh made tortillas. Yum!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
